Selling Books, Rideboard, etc
Well Folks,
Its about that time of year when you should probably start putting your school books up for auction. I personally recommend the DAILY JOLT'S MARKETPLACE FEATURE. But hey, i'm biased. Logically speaking though, If you really want to sell your books the key is exposure. Put them and there ISBN's on as many sites as possible. This if obviously going to take some time BUT it will be worth the extra cash in the end. Trust me. The Jolt is just another resourse at your finger tips. Opportunites are like the apples in front of TDR: even though there is plenty of them, people seldom take them. The point is: they're there for the taking.
Additionally now would be a good time to put some stuff on the rideboard because, well, we all want to go home.
Academy Awards Reactions Continued. . .
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Kate Winslet for The Reader
Our Pick - Happy to see Kate Winslet win one (Personally I think she got robbed in 2005 when she didn't win for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind) although we were not that impressed with her performace in The Reader. We have gone with Anne Hathaway for her performance in Rachel Getting Married.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
Our Pick - As good as Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are in just about everything, Heath Ledger is clearly the winner here. He took an iconic character, made it his own and created a performance that we couldn't look away from. He did an amazing job
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Our Pick - Penelope Cruz was great as the firey psychotic artist and we at the Jolt would have made the same pick. Although we feel that Marisa Tomei was excellent in The Wrestler and we wouldn't have been upset if she had won instead.
Milk and Oreo Mondays
If you live in McDowell then you already may know about it. RHA, in an effort to "foster community" every other week a different floor in McDowell will host Milk and Oreo Mondays! Whooooo!! All it really means is that there will be free milk and oreos on some random floor in McD and you might get to meet some new people. If your not down with the meet and greet, get the free stuff and bounce. If you don't live on North Side (because all the buildings are connected, so if you live in one you live in them all) you need to get come get claimed.

Another Contest?
Okay Jolters, I have another contest for you. This one is simple. Starting on Thursday, February 12th and until the Thursday, February 19th we're going to be making a push for lots of new Professor quotes. Now normally I would have you just submit them on regularly.
But for the person who submits the most quotes, you'll win a Daily Jolt Cup and the person who has the funniest quote judged by the community will also win a DJ Cup.
So instead I want you to email me the quote, the professor and the context. And then on the 19th the person who has the most professor quotes submitted will get the prize.
And I'll post all the entries so that you have the weekend to vote on them. So pay attention in class Jolters and email me those quotes.
My email is again, rr3834a@american.eduCongratulations to Topher Anuzis
Topher Anuzis was the winner of the Basketball t-shirt over the weekend. Congratulations.
Club Sports Get Shafted
Has anyone noticed how the club sports of this school get shafted on field time? I play for the club lacrosse team and we get shitty times. Twice a week is all we get to practice and we also have NO home games this semester. So instead we play all road games. At places like Richmond, UMD, Howard and Shippensburg, we play games with no fans rooting for us. We play in hostile enviroments and they expect us to be sucessful?
Last Thursday we had a practice scheduled for 4:30... The girls lacrosse team didn't get off the field because they couldn't believe that we would actually get field time. There is a feeling of superiority amongst the athletic department. They have that perfectly good grass field that anyone could use, but no, it's too important to share. It's too expensive to keep up so everyone can use it, but we instead need to pay Jeff Jones his salary.
And this isn't isolated ot just AU Men's Lax, it's for every club sport. Our rugby teams and our frisbee teams are amazing, but no one knows about them because club sports never lets them play on home turf. So maybe the Athletic Department needs to reevaluate their priorites and give a fair chance to everyone to have good field time.

Our Lease Ran Out

Apparently AU didn't pay rent on our metro stop so they pulled our name and Adam's Morgan's too... Just kidding, someone screwed up the sign in the Farragut North Metro Station.

Super Bowl XLIII
So do I dare say I was rooting for the Cardinals all last night? Fitzgerald was amazing with some of those catches and I really think that he played an outstanding game.
On the other side, James Harrison, how did he get to the endzone? He just went running and pulling people with him. I really give him props for pulling that out.
It was a great game with it the Cards being down big then coming back to lead for a bit. I think it was even better than last years. But that's just my opinion.

I just got Netflix for Christmas, and I love it. The best part is the instant movies. They even work on AU's slow system. Wide range of stuff to watch. I just finished Showtime's "Dead Like Me" with Ellen Muth and Mandy Patinkin and now I'm working on "Jeremiah" with Luke Perry. Plus if you have to watch a movie for class and you can't find it at Media Services (Where I work) Netflix can have it to you in a few days. So if you're interested in movies, Netflix is the way to go.

So the Nationals have lowered ticket prices to the AAA price range that they deserve. With the economy slumping they're hoping that this will help bring up their dismial attendance numbers. No one actually goes to see the Nats, they go to see the team they're playing. I'm among them. I buy tickets to the games just so I can see the Phillies....

KPU Strikes Back!... With Sleeping Pills?
With midterms winding down and the political climate heating up, the Kennedy Political Union adds a little spice to life by inviting some interesting speakers to discuss some controversial topics...or do they?. With this being their 40 year anniversary KPU has lined up dozens of speakers to fill the year. On Tuesday AU welcomed John McCardell, president of Choose Responsibility and “America’s leading advocate for lowering the drinking age.” Choose Responsibility is a non-profit he developed to help him combat the current 21 and over drinking law.

The Eagle Reprimanded By… Well, The Eagle
The Eagle’s recent “breaking news” regarding the new Eagle Eye program has put the publication under increasing scrutiny. The Eagle has, as a result, lost supporters who no longer trust its credibility. Carl Seip , AU Issues Columnist for The Eagle, lets them have it as he points out where they went horribly wrong.
For those of you that don’t stay informed the online copy of the article is here: http://media.www.theeagleonline.com/media/storage/paper666/news/2008/09/18/News/Housing.And.Dining.To.Conduct.New.Student.Monitoring.Program-3439010.shtml -but of course this version has the addendum of corrections for your viewing pleasure.
At first glance, the average student is either freaked out, enraged or both. Read it again. Now read it one more time for good measure. Notice anything? Besides being poorly written and being riddled with “he said” and “The Eagle learned”, the article lacks, I don’t know….credibility? The article does quote Rick Treter, the Director of Resident Life, but only in his more insignificant statements. Housing and Dining Executive, Chris Moody, doesn’t really have much to say about the matter judging by The Eagle. Not to mention that the RA’s are voiceless and poorly represented.
But the real star of this article is Carl Seip, who had this to say:
“If this is to be the level of journalism at AU, we should be ashamed of ourselves…The Eagle, however, has already had its chance - and it failed miserably. This newspaper has done an unfaithful and embarrassing job of investigating and reporting … The Eagle should not create more questions than it answers, as this [article] does…It should not even be published. Many people have stopped reading The Eagle because they have stopped trusting The Eagle. After articles such as this, it's not difficult to see why… [we should] demand that our student newspaper do better. Require that The Eagle investigate critically…Only adhering to the highest journalistic standard will The Eagle re-earn students' trust.”
And to that end, we can all agree.

Procrastination... Just Don't Do It...
We’re only four weeks in to class and the sweet scent of procrastination is in the air. Even if you have yet to succumb to the temptation, the Main Campus Library definitely provides some additional incentive. This past Tuesday student’s joined Student Government to celebrate “First Perk”, the library’s official kick-off to their extended 24/5 access! If you didn’t go, kick yourself-because Student Government provided free Starbucks coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, drinks, pens, t-shirts and even water bottles! As if that isn’t bad enough about a week ago The Eagles Nest and Subway extended their hours to 2 am.
