Best Places to Study at AU

Apparently amongst all the stuff going on at college, you’re expected to do some studying. Unless your roommate is completely silent, you have sworn off AIM and your neighbors are absent, you’re going to have a difficult time getting actual studying done in your own room. As a result, you will have to seek out alternative study spots, and there are some good ones. Some are obvious, some not so obvious. But they're all great places to cram!

  • Floor Study Room: Got serious work to do? Try your floor's study room. No windows to gaze out of, no AIM profiles to check, no ringing phones, and no TV. It's not fun in there, but trust us, you'll get your work done. The one risk is that you will slip back into your room.

  • Bender Library: Of course! Study in the library! Bender Library, though hideously ugly, is a good place to do work. It's quiet, clean, and the reference librarians are top-notch. Plus everyone else there is trying to do work, so the atmosphere might convince you to do some too. You also have quick access to books, network jacks and wireless connection. It’s not open too late though, so it is not a good location for an all-nighter.

  • The Amphitheater: For the nature-lover (or the sun goddess), studying in the Amphitheater is a great treat (until winter turns it into a sled slope). With all the flowers and trees, it is one of the prettiest spots on campus. If you live on the North Side, there's no reason why you shouldn't try studying out in your backyard at least once. It is similar to the Quad, but usually quieter, with less chance of being nailed with a Frisbee.

  • The Quad: Not the most productive spot on campus, but maybe the most enjoyable way to study. You won't feel like you're wasting a gorgeous day sitting inside studying. Bring a blanket and you can enjoy a nice spring day and study at the same time. Just watch out for the Frisbees.

  • Mary Graydon: Any time of day, you can find someone studying in MGC. Groups like to meet here because it's easy to work at one of the couches or table in the Marketplace, and off-campus students like the open rooms on the second floor. Home to library refugees after 2am, the crowd can turn into the "I'm-in-the-groove-I'm-not-going-to-quit-studying-now-even-if-it-is-4-AM" type, but they don't bite. They're just hardworking, desperate procrastinators or overachievers.
